DESCRIPTION:If you or your family are interested in applying for Croatian Citizenship\, then come along to an informal discussion and information session at the Club at 5:15pm on Saturday 28 February (after the Language Cafe).\n\nOur Treasurer\, Jude Urlich\, will be hosting the session\, sharing her knowledge and handy tips she has gleaned from her own successful application\, as well as having assisted family and friends through the process! DESCRIPTION:The much-loved Language Café is back for 2026 and will take place at 3-5pm on the last Saturday of each month from February to November in the club rooms.\n\n3:00pm – 4:00pm – Learning activities for the children; and4:00pm – 5:00pm – Language class for adults.\n\nThe Language Cafe is run by language teacher Maja Krtalić. This is a great opportunity to try learning the Croatian language in a relaxed and informal environment.\n\nOur library will also be open for you to browse\, read and borrow novels\, cookbooks\, children’s books\, CDs and language resources.\n\nLanguage Café has been running since 2021. There is no need to sign up\, just come along. While there is no cost\, a plate to share for afternoon tea would be most welcome.\n

DESCRIPTION:Dave’s frozen octopus pack has arrived\, so he’ll be running a Taste of Croatia session that will create the octopus salad served at our last Christmas lunch. Toby Barach has also offered to bring a BBQ to fry off some tentacles for a different flavour (Dave only has two arms\, unlike an octopus…). \nAttendance is free\, but let Dave know if you’re coming so he can put out chairs for the right numbers (021 404 334\, or dave@ed.co.nz). \nIf you have ideas about cooking session topics this year\, let Dave know. DESCRIPTION:You are invited to the 14 Dec 2025 Christmas lunch for the Croatian Cultural Society Wellington. It is the club’s biggest day of the year\, and we look forward to seeing you there. Bookings are now open at our Google Form – we need bookings and payment by 30 November. \nThe main course will be largely catered\, but we: \n\nhave volunteers making ćevapi\, octopus salad and punjene paprike/stuffed peppers to add a Croatian flavour; and\ninvite members to bring a dessert plate to share\, whether it’s from Croatia\, NZ or elsewhere.\n\nWe are planning to cater for different dietary requirements\, so please put down any needs on the booking form. \nTiming \n\n\n\n11am\nCroatian Mass\nFr Bozjak is coming down from Auckland to give a Mass in Croatian at St Anne’s Church (22 Emmett St\, Newtown). He will join us for lunch afterwards.\n\n\n12pm\nClub doors open\nThe club doors open at 12pm at 32 Hania St\, Mt Victoria. Father Christmas – Djed Božićnjak 🧑‍🎄visits before lunch is served (parents\, don’t forget to bring a named and wrapped gift for your child to pop under the tree for them).\n\n\nAbout 12.30pm\nLunch starts\nA buffet main course will be served. DESCRIPTION:A group of Croatian and Australian academics are touring NZ Croatian clubs in November\, as a contribution to the celebration of the 1100th anniversary of the coronation of the Croatian King Tomislav. It’s a wonderful chance to engage with new ideas. \n\n\nThey will be at our club on Wednesday 26 November at 5.30pm (for a 6pm presentation). It is part of a project on “Science\, Culture and Economy – Links between Croatian Communities in the World and the Homeland”. \n\n\nThe presentations are on: \n\n\n\n\n\nBrief history of Croatian standard language – Prof. Luka Budak (former Head of Croatian Studies\, Macquarie University); \n\n\n\n\nWorld-renowned Croatian scientists and inventors – Dr. Marijana Borić\, Scientific Advisor (Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts – CASA); \n\n\n\n\nThe Croatian economy from 1992 to the present day – Prof. Tomislava Majić\, Senior Lecturer (University North); and \n\n\n\n\nCroatian language recognition in Australia in 1970s – Prof. Ana Bruning (former lecturer at Croatian Studies\, Macquarie University and long-time Croatian language teacher at the Croatian Schools in Sydney. \n\n\n\n\n\nThe presenters acknowledge the support of Croatian Studies Foundation of Australia\, Central State Office for Croats Outside of the Republic of Croatia\, Foundation of Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts.

DESCRIPTION:Come along on Sunday 24 August at 2-4pm to enjoy fritule\, a traditional Dalmatian festive dessert\, often cooked at Christmas. Fritule are one of the most requested recipes we’ve had for Taste of Croatia\, so come down this Sunday when Danica Rudelj will be sharing her recipe! \nDanica will be making her dough beforehand\, which will mean we will have more time to enjoy eating it. SUMMARY:Taste of Croatia - Londoneri & Louise Cake
DESCRIPTION:People asked for some sweets\, so we’ll be making a Croatian and NZ version of a similar slice/cake (Londoneri and Louise Cake). \n\nThe NZ version is Louise cake (shortbread-like base\, covered in raspberry jam\, with a coconut meringue on top). Louise cake is world famous in NZ and some sources suggest it is NZ-created.\nIn Croatia and neighbouring countries\, they make Londonske Štange and several other names – often the cakes are just called Londoneri or Londoners.
