DESCRIPTION:At the November Language Café\, 32 Hania Street Wellington – special guests Ivana Hebrang-Grgić and Ana Barbarić from the University of Zagreb Croatia\, will be visiting us and run several activities including a book presentation and an exhibition. \nThere will be activities for children (3 to 3:45pm) and adults (4 to 5pm) followed by a social hour. \nPlease join us at the Club to welcome Ivana and Ana\, hear about how Croats in New Zealand communicated through the years\, and learn more about the old Croatian script called Glagoljica or Glagolitic script \nBook Presentation – Ivana and Ana recently published a book in English titled “Their Faraway Home: The Story of Croats in New Zealand Through Publications”. They will talk us through selected interesting stories and Croats in New Zealand\, their families\, their cultural and other social activities \nExhibition “They Wrote in Glagolitic Script…” Ivana and Ana will present a small exhibition and explain the origins of the Glagolitic Script. The aim of the exhibition is to display and promote Croatian Glagolitic heritage\, Croatian language\, history and culture through texts written in the Glagolitic Script. The audience will be given QR Codes to access some additional sources\, including computer games for learning the Glagolitic Script

DESCRIPTION:The movie Murina: Rating: M. In Croatian with English subtitles. Winner of the Caméra d’Or award at Cannes in 2021 for Best First Feature Film. Murina is a psychological drama and a coming of age tale of a young woman’s struggle for independence. On the surface\, 16-year old Julija’s life looks like paradise\, but a deeper dive shows she and her mother Nela must carefully navigate the oppressive rule of a controlling father and husband. Tensions rise when a charismatic and wealthy family friend arrives at their Croatian island home. For Ante he offers the chance for a life changing deal. For Nela he’s a reminder of a different life she could have had. For Julija he’s a getaway plan. \nMurina will be followed by a documentary entitled Countryman by Peter Pecotić\, an Australian film maker of Croatian descent. While retracing his late father’s foot steps across parts of Australia Peter meets up with Yugi an indigenous Croatian Australian artist from the desert. Together they discover a shared ancestry\, values and explore relationships to country. The documentary premiered during the Croatian Film Festival 2021 and was financially supported by the Central State Office for Croats Abroad.
