SUMMARY:SGM to Consider Life Membership for Ivan Sarich
DESCRIPTION:At our last Special General Meeting (SGM) we voted to award Life Membership to two very special people\, Milivoy Hrstich and Joan Barbalich. \nAt the meeting\, the Committee let the membership know that they were welcome to propose others for Life Membership and that the Committee would consider all proposals against the criteria set out in the Constitution. We would then nominate members at the next Annual General Meeting (AGM)\, due to be held in May 2025. \nHowever\, we have since received a proposal from a member for the Committee to consider nominating Ivan Sarich\, a long-standing and valued Club Member\, for Life Membership. There is much sadness and a need for haste in this proposal\, as due to serious ill health\, we are unable to wait until the next AGM. \nGiven Ivan’s long service and contribution to the Club\, the Committee has agreed to nominate Ivan Sarich for Life Membership. \nGiven the extenuating circumstances\, the Committee has agreed to hold a very short SGM for the sole purpose of putting the nomination of Ivan Sarich to be a Life Member of the Club to the membership to vote on. The Committee will present the following motion at the SGM: \n\nThat we invite Ivan Sarich to become a Life Member\, based on his service to the Club and the community\, as noted in the biography presented at the meeting. Life Membership will be confirmed once the invitation is accepted by the nominee.\n\nWe would like to give Notice and invite all members to attend a Special General Meeting at the Club at 5.15pm on the 28th September 2024. This is the same day as the Language Cafe and we hope that this will make it easier for more people to join us from 5pm. As this is a single-issue SGM\, we anticipate it not taking more than 15 minutes. \nWe hope you will join us for this special event. Please feel free to bring a plate to share and the bar will be open too! All going well\, we hope to have the Fistonich Wine orders ready to pick up too. \nOne last thing\, to be able to vote\, you need to be a Full and paid-up Member of the Society. SUMMARY:Taste of Croatia - Londoneri & Louise Cake
DESCRIPTION:People asked for some sweets\, so we’ll be making a Croatian and NZ version of a similar slice/cake (Londoneri and Louise Cake). \n\nThe NZ version is Louise cake (shortbread-like base\, covered in raspberry jam\, with a coconut meringue on top). Louise cake is world famous in NZ and some sources suggest it is NZ-created.\nIn Croatia and neighbouring countries\, they make Londonske Štange and several other names – often the cakes are just called Londoneri or Londoners. They have a similar base\, with apricot or plum jam in the middle\, and a meringue with ground walnuts (and maybe hazelnut or dark chocolate).\n\nLet Dave Guerin know if you’re coming to the 13 July session at dave@ed.co.nz or 021 404 334

Attendance is open to all\, but we want to make sure we have enough food. \n\n\nOur Taste of Croatia cooking sessions are mainly a demonstration\, but we try to get people involved as much as possible. It’s a chance to learn about the history of a dish\, how its made\, and then try it at the end. There’s usually a few gaps for us to have a good chat. We start with a cuppa and the bar is often open towards the end.

DESCRIPTION:A group of Croatian and Australian academics are touring NZ Croatian clubs in November\, as a contribution to the celebration of the 1100th anniversary of the coronation of the Croatian King Tomislav. It’s a wonderful chance to engage with new ideas. \n\n\nThey will be at our club on Wednesday 26 November at 5.30pm (for a 6pm presentation). It is part of a project on “Science\, Culture and Economy – Links between Croatian Communities in the World and the Homeland”. \n\n\nThe presentations are on: \n\n\n\n\n\nBrief history of Croatian standard language – Prof. Luka Budak (former Head of Croatian Studies\, Macquarie University); \n\n\n\n\nWorld-renowned Croatian scientists and inventors – Dr. Marijana Borić\, Scientific Advisor (Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts – CASA); \n\n\n\n\nThe Croatian economy from 1992 to the present day – Prof. Tomislava Majić\, Senior Lecturer (University North); and \n\n\n\n\nCroatian language recognition in Australia in 1970s – Prof. Ana Bruning (former lecturer at Croatian Studies\, Macquarie University and long-time Croatian language teacher at the Croatian Schools in Sydney. \n\n\n\n\n\nThe presenters acknowledge the support of Croatian Studies Foundation of Australia\, Central State Office for Croats Outside of the Republic of Croatia\, Foundation of Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts.
