DESCRIPTION:The movie Murina: Rating: M. In Croatian with English subtitles. Winner of the Caméra d’Or award at Cannes in 2021 for Best First Feature Film. Murina is a psychological drama and a coming of age tale of a young woman’s struggle for independence. On the surface\, 16-year old Julija’s life looks like paradise\, but a deeper dive shows she and her mother Nela must carefully navigate the oppressive rule of a controlling father and husband. Tensions rise when a charismatic and wealthy family friend arrives at their Croatian island home. For Ante he offers the chance for a life changing deal. For Nela he’s a reminder of a different life she could have had. For Julija he’s a getaway plan. \nMurina will be followed by a documentary entitled Countryman by Peter Pecotić\, an Australian film maker of Croatian descent. While retracing his late father’s foot steps across parts of Australia Peter meets up with Yugi an indigenous Croatian Australian artist from the desert. Together they discover a shared ancestry\, values and explore relationships to country. The documentary premiered during the Croatian Film Festival 2021 and was financially supported by the Central State Office for Croats Abroad.

Our Italian friends are welcome too\, of course!\nCroatia is\, like NZ\, a sports overachiever for its size (4m people). It has reached the final or semifinal or final of the last two men’s football World Cups. This game is the third and final Euro 2024 group stage game\, but it’s the first one at a good time for us to gather. Both teams will be keen for a good result.\nEntry is free to all members\, and we ask for a gold coin donation from others (or a bank transfer). Tea\, coffee\, and light breakfast supplied.\nDoors open 6.45am. Game starts 7am\, and should finish by 9am. Wear your team colours!

DESCRIPTION:The much-loved Language Café will take place at 3pm on Saturday 29 June in the club rooms.\n3:00pm – 4:00pm – Learning activities for the children4:00pm – 5:00pm – Language class for adults.\nThis year the Language Cafe will be run by language teacher Maja Krtalić.\nThis is a great opportunity to try learning the Croatian language in a relaxed and informal environment.Our library will also be open for you to browse\, read and borrow novels\, cookbooks\, children’s books\, CDs and language resources.\nLanguage Café has been running since 2021\, and it usually takes place every last Saturday of the month from 3 to 5 pm.\nThere is no need to sign up\, just come along. While there is no cost\, a plate to share for afternoon tea would be most welcome.
