SUMMARY:Cooking at the Club - Bread and Fish
DESCRIPTION:Cooking at the Club is a new series of events where we’ll aim for everyone to learn\, and to share their skills. If you’re new to cooking\, or cooking Croatian food\, come along and give it a go. If you’re already a great cook\, come and help out. All are welcome\, members or not. This session is free\, but future sessions may have an ingredients charge. \nDave Guerin is organising the sessions and will search out different recipes and usually try two different takes on the same basic idea. He’ll organise the ingredients and there may be a small charge for that. Everyone will get involved in the cooking\, and get a taste of the results. Sessions will probably last about two hours. You need to contact Dave at dave@ed.co.nz or 021 404 334 if you want to come\, so that we can sort out ingredient quantities. \nThis session\, Bread and Fish\, involves simple and yummy Dalmation island dishes – the first two are from Vis and the third is from Hvar. \n\nViška pogača\nKomiška pogača (Dave just made this one\, and you can see the filling below)\nForska pogača\n\nThese three recipes all involve a simple focaccia-like dough (but not as bubbly)\, with a filling in the middle based on fried onions and anchovies. There’s a basic version\, one that adds tomatoes\, and one that adds goat/sheep cheese. If we can do all three\, we will. This session might go a bit long\, but there will be food available partway through.

DESCRIPTION:The capsicums are cheap\, so it’s time to make ajvar!\nJust like with last year’s bread session\, we’ll try a couple of recipes\, everyone can have a go\, and we’ll try some food at the end.\nJosip and Nada Kolić have shared their family recipe (capsicums only) and we’ll do another recipe with eggplant to make a comparison.\nThere will be no participation cost\, as the Executive has decided that A Taste of Croatia is one of our priority sessions\, along with Language Cafe\, so we want to encourage as much participation as possible.\nBring a clean jar along with a good lid if you’d like to take some ajvar home\, but you’ll need to get stuck in peeling and stirring first. SUMMARY:Taste of Croatia - Londoneri & Louise Cake
DESCRIPTION:People asked for some sweets\, so we’ll be making a Croatian and NZ version of a similar slice/cake (Londoneri and Louise Cake). \n\nThe NZ version is Louise cake (shortbread-like base\, covered in raspberry jam\, with a coconut meringue on top). Louise cake is world famous in NZ and some sources suggest it is NZ-created.\nIn Croatia and neighbouring countries\, they make Londonske Štange and several other names – often the cakes are just called Londoneri or Londoners. They have a similar base\, with apricot or plum jam in the middle\, and a meringue with ground walnuts (and maybe hazelnut or dark chocolate).\n\nLet Dave Guerin know if you’re coming to the 13 July session at dave@ed.co.nz or 021 404 334

It’s a chance to learn about the history of a dish\, how its made\, and then try it at the end. There’s usually a few gaps for us to have a good chat. We start with a cuppa and the bar is often open towards the end.
